Passed away Friday morning, June 24, 2016, at Memorial Healthcare of Owosso, surrounded by her family during her last hours. She was 78 years old. Her funeral service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at the Misiuk Funeral Home of Chesaning. Katherine Paul will officiate. Cremation will follow. Visitation at the funeral home will be from 2:00-8:00 pm Monday and from 11:00 am Tuesday until time of the service. A luncheon will follow the funeral service from 3:00-5:00 pm Tuesday at the Back Forty Bar & Grill of Chesaning.
Bernitta was born in St. Charles, Michigan on November 1937, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth May (Kendzora) Williams. Bernitta married Galen L. Smeltzer in Oakley, Michigan on July 31, 1954. They were married for over 51 years before he preceded her in death on April 6, 2006. Bernitta worked at Johnson Controls Battery plant until she retired in 1994. She enjoyed spending time with her family, going to the casino, and working outside.
Bernitta is survived by her six children, Terrie and Kip Barnes, Alan and Nadine Smeltzer, Laurie Phillips, Mark Smeltzer, Rene Martin, Mary and Kevin Hickmott; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lizzie Williams, and her grandson, Jonathan Hickmott.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations given in memory of Bernitta may be made to Hope for NKH, 11630 Brady Road, Chesaning, MI 48616.
