Patricia Malcolm Obituary

Patricia Louise (Maurer) Malcolm of Chesaning, Michigan passed away on September 30, 2025, age 96. Pat was born in her parent’s home in Hastings, Michigan on May 24, 1929. She spent her final five years at Union Court Assisted Living Facility where she received loving care. She was the fifth of 12 children born to George Peter and Laura Etta (Cheeseman) Maurer. She married her high school sweetheart, John Malcolm on February 19, 1949, in Hastings, Michigan. They moved to Chesaning, Michigan in 1952 when Chesaning Union High School hired John to teach history. She supported her husband in his career as a high school teacher and principal. They enjoyed 63 years of marriage and raised five children. She attended St. Rose of Lima grade school and graduated from Hastings High School. She worked at Grand Rapids Bookcase and Chair Company and Consumers Power. Pat’s Catholic faith guided her life. She was a member of and supported Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish for 74 years. She belonged to the Study Club, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and taught CCD. She raised her children in the Catholic faith. Pat enjoyed traveling with her husband and children throughout the United States except when their travels encountered a major bridge while her husband exclaimed over the views and she screamed fearing they would plunge over the edge. She endured mostly with patience while her husband took frequent unplanned visits to historic sites. They visited 49 of the 50 states. Pat loved playing bridge with her friends but bemoaned the disinterest of her children in that hobby. She bowled in a local league and enjoyed golfing with her friends and husband. In 1953 she witnessed the storm clouds of the deadly Flint tornado that left her with a lifetime fear of tornadoes. That dissipated once the youngest of her children left home. She possessed a naturally cheerful disposition and maintained a positive outlook despite her children testing her during their teenage years. She often expressed gratitude for a wonderful life with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She trusted in her faith and enjoyed a glass of red wine and occasionally two. Pat dedicated her lifetime to loving and supporting her children and their spouses, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and brothers and sisters. Her children treasure memories of summer vacations at Glen Lake in northern Michigan and warm celebrations for Christmas in Chesaning. Her family occupied the central part of her life, and she never wavered in her support and interest in their lives. She laid down a solid foundation of love and caring for her children that they handed down to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pat is survived by five children, John (Sheila) Malcolm of Boulder, Colorado, Mary Anne (Michael) Himmelspach of Holly, Michigan, James (Jeanne) Malcolm of Oakley, Michigan, Thomas Malcolm of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Michael (Elisa) Malcolm of Breckenridge, Colorado: 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by: her brothers: Leo (Loretta) Maurer of Delton, Michigan, Robert Maurer of Greensboro, North Carolina, Louie (Susan) Maurer of Plainwell, Michigan; sisters: Mary Davisson of Lansing, Michigan, Jean (Richard) Annable of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; sister-in-law Janet Maurer of New Oxford, Pennsylvania; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by: her parents; grandson, Michael Malcolm; sisters: Helene (Frederick “Mac”) Kerr, Barbara (Lyle) Thompson, Laura (Joseph) Saddler, Janet (Jack) Swaim; and brothers: Peter (Wilma) Maurer and George Maurer; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Maurer.
