Matthew C. Murrey Obituary

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for his life that we announce the passing of Matthew C. Murrey, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend to many. Matthew departed this world peacefully on May 18, 2026, at the age of 57, at Covenant Medical Center, Saginaw MI following a work-related accident. Though his departure was unexpected, his legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Born on August 20, 1968, in Alexandria, Virginia, Matthew was the cherished son of the late Samuel Edwards Murrey and Anna Norene (Hall) Murrey, who undoubtedly welcomed him with open arms into the next life.

Matthew's educational journey led him to graduate from Rapid City Central High School in Rapid City, SD in 1987, after which he pursued further studies at Western Dakota Technical College. His academic pursuits were complemented by a lifelong commitment to community service, exemplified by his 41 years as an active and dedicated member of the Battle Creek Volunteer Fire Department in Hermosa, SD. He cherished every moment spent alongside his fellow firefighters, considering them an extended family bound by courage and camaraderie.

Beyond his service, Matthew was a man of diverse interests and abundant joy. He found happiness in the simple pleasures of life—dancing the 2-Step with grace and enthusiasm, and reveling in the music of his friends' band, Crash Wagon, in Rapid City, SD. His love for the Black Hills of South Dakota was obvious, often taking leisurely drives to soak in their natural beauty and occasionally trying his luck in Deadwood's casinos.

Matthew was a man whose heart overflowed with generosity and kindness. He devoted himself selflessly to the care of his aging parents, embodying the very essence of unselfish love and compassion. His gentle nature and unwavering dedication to move to Chesaning, MI to be close to his sister and family.

Matthew leaves behind a family who adored him. He is survived by his sister, Rachael (Donald) Wirostek. His legacy continues through his beloved niece, Katherine Wirostek, and his nephew, Seth Wirostek, who will carry forward the values and love he instilled in them. Also left behind are Aunt Barbara (Edward) Braunger, Uncle Gere Grove, and many cousins.

In celebrating Matthew's life, we remember a man who lived with purpose and passion, whose heart was open to all, and whose laughter and kindness left an indelible mark on everyone he met. As we say goodbye, we hold on to the memories of a life well-lived and a spirit that will forever remain in our hearts.

A memorial service honoring Matthew's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Battle Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 13730 HWY 40, Keystone, SD 57751 in Matthew's memory, ensuring that his spirit of service lives on.
