DEVOTA, Mary Ann – of St. Charles died Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Union Court Assisted Living in St. Charles. She was 84 years of age.
Mary Ann was born in Maple Grove Twp. on July 23, 1939, a daughter of the late Alphonse and Mary (Martin) Bishop. Mary Ann was raised in Maple Grove and graduated from St. Michael Catholic High School in the Class of 1957. She was united in marriage to Joseph Devota on June 20, 1959. They were married for over 28 years before he preceded her in death on May 28, 1988.
Mary Ann was a member of St. Peter’s Parish Catholic Church in Chesaning. She was a faithful servant, visiting the sick and lonely, and serving as a Eucharistic Minister. She had a gift that we all could see. She reached out to so many with phone calls, home visits, and mailings of greeting cards. (Hallmark stock dropped 75% when mom was unable to write her cards anymore.)
Mary Ann was a homemaker and had worked at a grocery store for a short time and in the sugar beet industry for two years. She was member of the League of Catholic Women and the Secular Franciscan Order. She kept busy with friends and family and so loved her 13 grandchildren. Mom loved to bake, and enjoyed watching game shows, playing cards, and watching the Detroit Tigers.
Mary Ann is survived by her loving children, Laura (Patrick) Higgins of Chesaning, Charles (Nancy) Devota of Chesaning, Jenifer (Roger) Martinski of St. Charles, and Mary Kay (Charles) Birchmeier of Chesaning; her adored grandchildren, Lindsay, Chelsea, Katrina, Joseph, Leo, Alex, Anna, Grant, Jessica, Courtney, Christopher, Cheston, and Chad; twelve great-grandchildren; her sisters, Rita Narlock of Bay City, Elizabeth Bishop of Grand Rapids, Kate Potucek of Saginaw, Rosie Heroux of New Lothrop, and Grace (Jack) Gasser of Chesaning; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Young and Eileen Devota, both of Chesaning; many nieces and nephews; and other loving family and friends. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Wells; three brothers, Eugene, Kenneth, and Victor Bishop; and a great-grandchild, Avery Hudecek.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, December 9, 2023, at St. Peter Parish Catholic Church with Fr. Raj Bandaru. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Chesaning. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Misiuk Funeral Home and then Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of the Mass. Contributions in memory of Mary Ann may be given to her family.
