Eleanor Rita Hobson Obituary

Heaven gained another treasure, and we here on earth lost one of the great ones.  After several months of bravely battling several physical ailments, Eleanor Rita Hobson died peacefully in her sleep at her home April 13, 2024.  Eleanor was born in Detroit, Michigan, on July 23, 1934, to Rita (Carli) Bailey.  On April 15, 1961, she married Jack R. Hobson.  They always joked that it was the one good thing that happened on Tax Day!  They began their life together in Sandusky, Michigan, and in 1969 moved to Chesaning, Michigan, and enjoyed building their life together and gaining many lifelong friendships with people in their new community.  Eleanor’s faith was always important to her and she faithfully served on a number of committees and filled many roles as a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist church.

Eleanor pursued many different career opportunities throughout her life, her longest employment being from 1970-1997 with Aunt Jane Foods, Inc. in New Lothrop, Michigan.  In addition to her employment, Eleanor also found joy in teaching Sunday school at Trinity United Methodist Church and reading to kids at Big Rock Elementary School for many years.  She also brought joy to young and old alike as her other alias, Pickles the Clown.  She loved making people, especially kids, feel seen and loved.

As we, her family, mourn her, we remember many fun and crazy memories of her.  The road trips that led to many unplanned destinations, fishing trips to Drummond Island (where she always claimed she caught the biggest pike), her “secret” recipes (“I don’t know exactly how much to put in…”), and how she loved to read, especially the book “What Was That” to all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  We will miss her amazing sense of humor, her sassy and spunky attitude, how she always made holidays special with handpicked gifts and lottery tickets under our dinner plates, the birthday cards she always sent and the occasional nagging when checks she sent in those cards never got cashed in what she considered a timely manner because it threw off her check book balance!  She was lovingly called “the General” by the whole extended family.  Not so much because she was bossy, but because she could take control of any situation and give clear direction on what to do next.  She was a true champion in every sense of the word when it came to loving her family well.  For Eleanor, family ALWAYS came first.

Eleanor was greatly loved and will be missed by her husband Jack, and daughters Vickie (Denver) Bennett, and Lisa (Shawn) Curtiss.  Other lives that Eleanor positively impacted and loved well include grandchildren Shelia (Rob) Bennett-Hornak, Angie (Ryan) Wenzlick, Lori Trumble, Leslie (Stefan) Pittsley, Matthew (Liz Arnold) Trumble, Collin Curtiss, Kylie Curtiss, great-grandchildren, Logan Hornak, Blake Hornak, Denver Wenzlick, Kayden Witt, Nicholas Decator, Hendrick Pittsley, Avery Pittsley, and Gavin Arnold.  Those that she loved like a mother as much as a big sister include brothers Benjamin (Claudia) Bailey, Elwin (Dar) Bailey, Harvey (Connie) Bailey and David (Nancy) Bailey.  She will also be missed by several close relatives and friends (you know who you are) that have always held a special place in her life, heart, and taking part in various mischievous adventures!  She is preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, older brother George Speigl, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and wonderful friends.

Per Eleanor’s wishes, there will be no traditional funeral service.  A celebration of life will be held at a future date to be determined.
