SWARTZMILLER, Donald F. – of Chesaning, died Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Union Court Assisted Living. He was 82 years of age,
Donald was born May 27, 1941, in Owosso, MI to the late Joseph and Dorothy (Hey) Swartzmiller and was a lifelong resident of Chesaning. Don was a 1959 graduate of Chesaning Union School and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1963. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Adams on January 19, 1963. He was the owner and CEO of Swartzmiller Lumber since 1963. Don was a former member of the Episcopal Church and most recently with Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Swartzmiller served as Fire Chief on the Chesaning Brady Fire Department, was a reserve officer for the Chesaning Police Department, served on the Chesaning Village Council, member of the Chamber of Commerce, JC’s, and was on the boat Crew of the Chesaning Showboat. He enjoyed going to the cabin in Tawas and was the caretaker of the cottage, and was a master gardener. The lumberyard was also the center of town where his best friend, Ken Valentine, and other locals would gather in the Bull Pen to discuss current events for many years.
Surviving are: wife, Marilyn; children: Annette Swartzmiller of Chesaning, Lisa (Kelly Effert) Swartzmiller of Delafield, WI, David (Kelly) Swartzmiller of Oakley; grandchildren: Alyssa Theile (Jeff Thiel), Christopher (Taylor) Theile, Evan Furstch, Colin Furstch, Riley Swartzmiller, Lillian Swartzmiller, Michael Swartzmiller; and his canine companion, Zeke; his pseudo daughter, Ann Selleck McCormick; and he was awaiting the arrival of his great-grandchild, Baby “T.”
Funeral services will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Chesaning on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 11 a.m. Pastor Janine Plum officiating. Visitation will be at the Misiuk Funeral Home in Chesaning on Wednesday May 22, 2024, from 3-8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. A Fireman’s tribute will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at a later date in Wildwood Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Saginaw County Animal Control.
