BATES, Dean of Chesaning died Monday, June 12, 2023, at Chesaning Comfort Care. He was 78 years old.
Dean was born in Owosso on November 22, 1944, a son of Franklin Dewey and Irene (Griffus) Bates. Dean was a lifetime resident of Chesaning. He graduated from Chesaning Union High School in the Class of 1962. He was united in marriage to Shirley J. Reeves in Chesaning on September 24, 1966.
Dean started his career working for GM-Flint Truck and Bus. He later became a truck driver and worked for Peet Packing for 33 years, then Hancor for four years, and finally, Penske Trucking for seven years before retiring in 2007. Dean had also served with the Michigan National Guard for six years with the 144th Military Police Unit, when they were based in Owosso. During this time, his unit was placed on active duty by Executive Order to assist the police during the 1967 Detroit riot.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Shirley; their two children, son, Michael (Dana) Bates and their children, Mitchell (Char) Bates, Abby Bates (Josh Duffy), and Matthew Bates (Emily Duranso); and son, Patrick (Tonya) Bates and their children, Eric and Tyler Bates; his siblings, Judy Willson, Cheryl (Larry) Sutter, Roger Bates, Randy Bates, and Kevin (Sheila) Bates; sisters-in-law, Gloria (Walser) Bates and Phillis Bates; brother-in-law, Randy Burt, nieces and nephews; and other family and friends. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Dewey and Irene Bates; his brothers, Frank and Maurice “Moose” Bates; sisters, Karen Jill Bates and Dawn Bates Burt; and his parents-in-law, John and Jean Schlaack.
