Obituary

Catherine Roberta “Kay” Wilcox of Chesaning, age 94, died Saturday, October 17, 2020 in comfort at Chesaning Union Court Assisted Living.

Kay was born February 17, 1926 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.  She was born into the family of Bob and Verna Mills of Brimley, Michigan with six sisters and two brothers.  She loved driving the farm’s team of work horses and excelled in school.  She won first place State Honors in a radio speaking/writing contest as she addressed the treatment of Tuberculosis during her junior year in high school.  Kay prized all family members and spent as much time as she could with them as she and husband Wendell Wilcox had a cabin in the Brimley area where family members from all over the United States would gather together during the summer months.

After family, Kay loved Chesaning.  She was a cook in the Chesaning School System for 31 years.  Many people still remember her delicious food at the Middle School and the caring person she was.  She sold real estate for a while, but retired early to take care of her aging mother in their home.  Kay was faithful to the Trinity United Methodist Church and a member for over 70 years.  She loved singing in the church choir, served all offices in the Women’s Christian organization as well as other church offices.

Kay served the community by being the first female member of the Showboat Committee and served as Chairman.  She was a one night only female End Woman when one of the regular End Men could not make the show.  She sang in the Showboat Choir for many years.  Kay was also awarded the Chamber Good Citizen Award.

Kay was married to Wendell Wilcox, celebrating 62 years together before his death in 2009.  She is survived by her daughters, Darlene Wasielewski (Dennis) of Midland and Christine Mishler (James)  of Chesaning; four grandchildren, Charlotte Diller (Scott) of East Jordan, Gavin Green (Beha) of Midland, Tressa Kelly (Brendan) of Carrollton, Georgia, and Sye Mishler (Naoko) of West Chester, Ohio; seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Denker (Claude) of Brimley, Mona Spinusa (Russell)  of Sault Ste. Marie, and Isabell McKay (Richard)  of Ceres, California; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell Wilcox; and siblings, Muriel McKiddie, Harris Mills, William Mills, June Olds, and Lila Miller.

A visitation will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Chesaning in the Fellowship Hall on Thursday, October 22, 2020 from Noon-2 PM.  Due to social distancing restrictions, her funeral at 2 PM will be limited only to Kay’s family and personal friends with Rev. Tim Woycik officiating.  A second funeral service will be held 1 PM Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at First Congregation Church in Brimley with Pastor Rodney Case officiating.  Burial will follow at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Sault Ste. Marie.  In lieu of flowers, Kay has requested memorial gifts in her honor to Trinity United Methodist Church or Heart to Heart Hospice at 2260 E. Saginaw Street, East Lansing, Michigan 48823.
