Tom was always larger than life to me. He was my older cousin (by 12 years) who came down to Seymour, Indiana one week dressed in his military uniform. He just showed up one day out of the blue in my little girl's mind, looking larger than life and very handsome in his uniform.

My mom immediately asked him to take me to the Girl's Club to sign me up for baton lessons. That's the kind of thing she would do. So off we went, and Tom suddenly found himself in a room full of mothers and little girl's who were all staring at him. He wanted to leave immediately because he was uncomfortable being the center of attention, but he was a handsome man and I wouldn't let him go until I got signed up for my class.

After that, I finally had a week to get to know this cousin who'd ignored me all my life. I never blamed him. I was just some kid and he was a teenager growing into a man who didn't have time for little girls.

But I liked the man I got to know that summer. He would actually talk to me and my brother, while we developed a serious case of hero worship.

After that, we never got to spend any close time with Tom again. We saw him when Grampa died in 1968, but we were in junior high and typical creatures from another world by then.

I never visited Flint again until 2002. I got to see Tom briefly in 1999 here in Colorado also when my mother died, just for an afternoon, and realized I still loved him like that little girl in Indiana. A part of me always has.

He was a good man. Very few would even think about social work after retiring, and it impressed me that he even considered a career helping others.

I know he loved his family very much by the way he spoke about you. He showed love and pride in every word. I'm sorry we never got to know each other.

I am so very heartbroken for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers. And I will miss the Tom I always carried in my heart.
