Dr. Robert Charles Newman DDS

Dr. Robert Charles Newman of Chesaning passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018, at Union Court Assisted Living of Chesaning.  Robert, Dr. Bob to many, was born June 25, 1929, in Roscommon.  The son of Max Eric Carl and Ruth Gwendolyn (Strelow) Newman, Bob grew up in Saginaw and graduated from Saginaw High School in 1947.  He attended Bay City Junior College (now Delta College) and received an Associate of Science Degree in 1949.  He then attended the University of Michigan and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry Education.  After graduation, Bob went to serve his country with the US Army during the Korean Conflict for 21 months.   With the financial support of the G.I. Bill, Bob attended the University of Michigan Dental School and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) Degree in 1957 and then opened his dental practice in Chesaning.  In 1959, Robert married Sally W. Perkins from Saginaw and the two were happily married until her death in 2008.  Robert was active in the community and for many years he looked forward to Showboat Week where he volunteered as a sound technician.  In 1974 Robert became Showboats Senior Chairman and in 1990 he was given the honor of being Grand Marshal of the Parade for the 50th anniversary of Showboat.  Bob was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta (Dental Fraternity) American Legion and the Michigan Dental Association.

After 43 years of practicing dentistry Bob retired and he and Sally were able to spend the winters in Melbourne Beach Florida and the summers back in Chesaning Michigan.  After Sally’s passing Bob became Friends with Ruth McKenzie and they were able to spend their time in Michigan and Florida until her passing in 2014.  In his final years Bob was able to spend his time with his special Friend Eva Mae Loomis who survives his passing. 

Robert and Sally have three children Eric (Jill Edwards), David (Mona), Matthew (Kerri Mose) and and a Granddaughter Jessa.

A celebration of his life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Misiuk Funeral Home in Chesaning with Pastor Nancy Steele officiating. Visitation will be on Friday from 5-8 p.m. and on Saturday from 2 p.m. until time of services at 4 p.m. Honoring his wishes cremation has taken place. In Lieu of Flowers the family ask that donations go to Chesaning Friends of the Library or the Chesaning C.A.E.R. Center. The family would like to thank the Staff and Union Court of Chesaning, Dr. Small and his staff and Beth and the staff at Broad Street Pharmacy along with A&D Hospice.
