Carl Joseph Birchmeier Sr. of Chesaning, MI, age 87, passed away peacefully at Union Court Assisted Living, St. Charles on Thanksgiving afternoon, November 23, 2017.  He was born on July 27, 1930, in Chesaning to Albert and Brigetta (Amman) Birchmeier.  With the early death of Brigetta, Carl’s father, Albert, married Martha (Emmendorfer), who was instrumental in raising Carl.

Carl enjoyed living in the Chesaning area his entire life, first as a dairy farmer from 1943 until 1973, and later as an equipment mechanic working for New Lothrop Hardware until his retirement in 1990.  He was a member of Michigan Farm Bureau Group and the Chesaning Knights of Columbus Council # 2943.  Carl has been a lifelong member of the St. Peter Parish Catholic Church in Chesaning.

On July 28, 1951, Carl married the love of his life, Marjorie Lange, and moved to their present day farm on Burt Road, Chesaning.  Carl was a proud and generous gardener; his fruits and vegetables were famous with family and friends.

Carl loved to bowl.  For years he bowled on both men’s and couples leagues.  He was a fierce competitor.  Carl and Marge traveled as often as she could talk him into it, but he was happiest at home playing cards every Sunday night for over 40 years with his family.  He also enjoyed their longtime couples card club group and Friday nights with his brothers.  He always had a deck of cards in his pocket…just in case.

Surviving Carl are his children, daughter, Christine (William) Chant of Chesaning; son, Carl Jr. (Laurie) of Saginaw; daughter, Susan (Greg) Mahoney of St. Charles;  son, John of Midland; and daughter, Donna (Dave) List of Chesaning; daughter-in-law, Lauree of Midland; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; his sisters, Alberta Young of  Chesaning, Janice (Dal) Angst of Maple Grove, and Sr. Josephine Mary of Grand Rapids; brothers, Norbert of St. Charles, Lawrence (Elaine) of Owosso, Vincent (Eleanor) of Chesaning, Tony (Marion) of Chesaning, Daniel (Jan) of Ithaca,  Dal (Carolyn) of Maple Grove, Al (Linda) of Chesaning; his brother-in-law, Doug (Bev) Lange of Hale; and sister-in-law, Carol (Bruce) Lange of Saginaw.  Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie (2013); his parents, Albert (1961) and Brigetta (1932); stepmother, Martha (2009); brother-in-law, Peter Young (2016); and sister-in-law Joan (Norb) Birchmeier (2007).

Carl has been cremated.  A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at St. Peter Parish Catholic Church, 404 S. Wood Street, Chesaning.  His family will be at the church to greet family and friends from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until time of the Mass.
