Annie Sumbera Obituary

Annie Sumbera of New Haven Twp, age 92, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Hurley Medical Center, Flint.  A private funeral service for the immediate family is to be held with burial following at Elmwood Cemetery in New Lothrop.

Annie was born at home in Owosso on February 16, 1926, the daughter of the late John and Barbara (Reminar) Fitnich.  Annie graduated from Owosso High School.  She married Frank Sumbera Jr. on February 7, 1942 and they worked many years together on their farm.  She had lived at the same farm for over 76 years.

Mrs. Sumbera had attended the Easton Church of Christ.  She had been an active member of the ZCBJ Lodge #242 of Owosso for 85 years.  Annie loved her Czechoslovakian-Croatian heritage and its ethnic music and events.  She could sing the words to many of the old songs.  Mrs. Sumbera was known as a great cook and baker, especially of authentic Czechoslovakian baked goods, which many people have enjoyed over the years.

While her three children were growing up, Annie was always in attendance and acting as the family’s photographer at their various sporting events and extracurricular activities.  In recent years, she loved attending many football and baseball games that were coached by her son, Frank, at Gross Pointe North High School.  She was a great seamstress and enjoyed sewing clothing for her two daughters.  She enjoyed playing cards and games with family and friends that were always followed by some of her homemade desserts.

Annie was a loving, caring and devoted person to her family and friends.  Together they would strip feathers for homemade pillows or quilts and also shell nuts or grind homegrown poppy seeds for their baked goods.

Annie is survived by her children, Sharron (Dan) Sheridan of Flushing and Frank III and (Mary Ellen) Sumbera of Gross Pointe Woods; her grandchildren, Danielle (Jerry) Barkman, Frank (Sara) Sumbera IV, William Sumbera, and Natalie Sumbera; great-grandsons, Frank V and Owen Sumbera; many nieces and nephews; and other loving family and friends.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marlene Kaye Sumbera in 2013; and all of her siblings, Katie Horvatt, Steve Fitnich, Matt Fitnich, Mary (Fitnich) Rozsypal. and Josephine (Fitnich) Whiting.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made towards the support of the “Old Country Polka Show”, which brought Annie so much enjoyment.  She would be happy to know that this Czech heritage would continue for others to enjoy.  Checks can be made payable to Sharron Sheridan or Frank Sumbera III.  All donations can be given to the family so they can forward them directly to the “Old Country Polka Show”.
