William J. "Bill" Cross
Of Albee Township, MI

Our beloved husband, father and grandfather, was called home to the Lord on Monday evening, January 1, 2018, at the Chesaning Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chesaning, MI due to complications from a short battle with leukemia.  He passed away in his quiet and gentle way.  Bill had been a patient in the rehabilitation center and he was working on rebuilding his strength to come home after a hospital stay in November.  He was 71 years old.  His funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, January 6, 2018, at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 133 Commercial Street, Chesaning.  Pastor Joel W. Thomford will officiate.  Vistiation for Bill will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, January 5 at the Misiuk Funeral Home of Chesaning.  On Saturday, his family will be at the church to greet relatives and friends from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service.

Bill was born on September 3, 1946, in Saginaw to Franklin “Bud” and Virginia Cross.  He grew up on the east side of Saginaw and graduated from Saginaw High in 1964.  Bill enlisted in the United States Army in the fall of 1964, and proudly served our country until September 1967.  He was stationed in Germany for 2½ years during his tour of duty and loved his time in Europe.

In December of 1967, he began a 42-year career with the Unites States Postal Service as a mailman.  He had various walking routes in the city of Saginaw for the first 15 years of his career and then finished his career on motor routes across many neighborhoods and subdivisions across Saginaw Township.  Near the end of his 42-year career, he received a “Million Mile Club” award in recognition of 30 years of safe driving.

On April 25, 1970, Bill married Donna (Heise) Cross at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chesaning.  Donna survives him.  They were blessed with 47 years of marriage, two daughters and their spouses, Deborah and Matt Jacovitch of Hemlock, Kathy and Jim Rohwetter of St Charles; and two special granddaughters, Shelby and Emilee Rohwetter.  He would light up when he was with his granddaughters.  Bill was predeceased by his parents, Bud and Virginia Cross.

Bill was baptized in the Catholic faith and joined the Lutheran church later in life, becoming a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chesaning.  Bill enjoyed playing cards, golf, and fishing.  He dabbled in carpentry.  He also enjoyed reading Tom Clancy novels and watching crime shows such as CSI and NCIS.  Bill was a fan of the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, and Big 10 football and basketball, rooting for Michigan State.  Each March he specifically looked forward to the NCAA College Basketball “March Madness” tournament.

Special thanks are given to the staff of the Chesaning Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their outstanding care, kindness, and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations given in memory of Bill may be made to the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the Chesaning Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with donations directed to their activity fund.
