Robert J. Meyer of Chesaning, age 85, a kind and gentle man, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, from the Chesaning Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his loving family.

Robert was born in Owosso on March 18, 1932, the son of Felix and Matilda (Hemgesberg) Meyer.  Robert graduated from Maple Grove St. Michael High School in 1950, where he excelled in basketball and baseball.  He was a U.S. Army Veteran and honorably served from 1953-1955.  He married his sweetheart, Patricia Gasser, his beloved wife of 63 years, on November 28, 1953.  She survives him.

Robert worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, first as a clerk and city carrier, and then a rural carrier.  He was appreciated by his patrons for his promptness and reliability.  He was a member of the St. Peter Parish Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion.  In his spare time, Robert enjoyed following the Detroit Tigers, going to the casino, bowling, and hunting.  He was a member of the Snowshoe Camp in Alpena.  Most of all, Robert loved to spend time with his family.

Surviving him, besides his loving wife, Patricia, are his children, Kathy (and Dan) Cech, Cheryl (and Paul) Bates, Dave (and Becky) Meyer, Jeff (and Nora) Meyer, and Michelle (and Dan) Coberley; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Meyer (and special friend, Marty); sister-in-law, Helen Gasser; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Kevin Cech.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2017, at St. Peter Parish Catholic Church, 404 S. Wood Street, Chesaning.  Fr. William Gruden will officiate.  Robert’s visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Misiuk Funeral Home of Chesaning.  A Knights of Columbus Rosary Service will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  Robert’s family will be present at the church to greet friends from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until time of the Mass.  Military Funeral Honors conducted by the American Legion will follow after the Mass at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Peter Parish Catholic Church.
