Josephine A. Sutton
Of Chesaning, formerly of Laingsburg
Age 102, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2016, at the Chesaning Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Chicago on January 19, 1914, to Maria and Vendo Kovalik. She enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, and was in the Women’s Army Corp during World War II in motor transportation, earning the rank of corporal (TEC 5). She was honorably discharged in January 1946. Upon her return to Michigan, she worked at Redmond’s of Owosso in quality control. She married John Sutton of Flint in Chesaning, on September 23, 1955. After residing in Oakley, they moved to Flint where they owned and operated a car wash. Years later they moved to Laingsburg where they enjoyed farming and organic gardening. John predeceased her in 1992. Her hobbies included an amazing flower garden, and taking care of her many dogs and pet chickens that she never hesitated to cook for dinner. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
“Auntie Jo” is survived by five nieces and nephews: Marion (Bob) Weigold of Chesaning, Frank Lycka of Chesaning, Richard (Dorla) Lycka of Florida, Agnes (Bob) Taylor of Florida, Harold (Barb) Scott of Sterling. Bob Lycka and Virginia Hines preceded her in death. She also has numerous great-, great-great and great-great-great-nieces and nephews, representing five generations.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Caroline Lycka and Vera Scott.
Funeral services will be held at Misiuk Funeral Home, Chesaning, on Tuesday, March 29. Visitation is at noon, with the service following at 1 p.m. Chaplain Ray Strawser of Memorial Healthcare and Hospice of Owosso will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at Fort Custer National Military Cemetery, Battle Creek.
