Passed away Sunday, August 27, 2017, at Union Court Assisted Living in St. Charles, Michigan. She was born April 30, 1920, in Maple Grove Township, the youngest of five children, to Peter and Rosina (Wille) Swartzmiller. As a child, Helen moved with her family to Albee Township where she resided until her marriage. While a teen and young adult, Helen liked meeting people and selling their farm produce at Flint City Market. She married Joseph Keeler on October 8, 1949. For most of their life together, Helen and Joe lived on a farm in Maple Grove where Helen helped with the farm and livestock. Helen loved animals and was a talented gardener, cook, and baker. A skilled seamstress, she also did quilting, knitting, crochet, and embroidery. Joe passed away on September 13, 2014, after nearly 65 years of marriage. Throughout her life, her faith and family were most important to Helen. In her later years Helen enjoyed reading, watching the Detroit Tigers, and visiting with family and friends. During her final 2½ years, she delighted in making new friends and reacquainting with childhood chums in St. Charles.
Helen is survived by her children, Kathleen (Paul) Volk, Richard (Sherry) Keeler, Janet (David) Roberts, Sharon (Mike) Pagryzinski; grandchildren, Jody (Janine) Kus, Mary Volk, Bethany (Fredric) Kapteyn, Kevin (Lindsay) Volk, Kristy (Domanic) Brown, David (Arielle) Pagryzinski, Judy Pagryzinski, Rebecca Roberts; nine great-grandchildren; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Theresa McCarty, Mary (Albert) Shawl, Ann (James) Sleno; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was predeceased by her brothers, Martin, infant Alvin, and Urban Swartzmiller; her sister, Doris (Carl) Ebenhoh; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
Funeral liturgy will take place at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 1, 2017, at St. Michael Catholic Church, New Lothrop. Rev. Fr. Robert Byrne will officiate. Burial will be at the St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, New Lothrop. Friends may call at Misiuk Funeral Home, Chesaning on Thursday, August 31 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., then at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service. A Rosary Service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Michael Church or Maple Grove Fire Department.
