Betty Haller Peet
Of Juno Beach, Florida and formerly of Bay City, Michigan

Passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at the Hospice of Palm Beach County in Jupiter, Florida. She was 92 years old. A private memorial service was held in Florida.

Graveside services for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at the Wildwood Cemetery, Chesaning.

Betty was born in Cloquet, Minnesota on January 13, 1925. She was the daughter of Albert F. and Lois (Webster) Haller. Betty married the love of her life, Millis Lincoln Peet. They first met as students at Albion College. Upon Millis’ return from the Air Force, they married (he took her flying and proposed to her mid-flight!) and moved to Ypsilanti where Betty taught chemistry at Eastern Michigan University.

Friendships were deeply cherished by Betty. She worked hard to cultivate and keep up with several circles of long, mutually supportive friendships; Bridge Club friends who met for fifty years in each other’s homes; her Methodist Church Women’s Circle, golf and tennis buddies, sorority friends, and beloved neighbors in each community in which she lived. Helen Nickless and she shared a special bond aptly defined by their needle point pillows, “You will always be my best friend. You know too much.” She was keenly interested in people and should be considered an “oral historian” for her profound ability to recall and recite detailed life histories. Emails and Facebook became her “life-line” as traveling was no longer an option.

A skilled bridge player, she was a highly sought partner in Contract Bridge tournaments. It particularly tickled her when a retired Physics professor considered her his equal.

Politics were her passion. Betty labored over concise Letters to the Editor in the Bay City Times and later to the Palm Beach Post. Each time she found one printed she rejoiced in the affirmation. She showed true grit going public with her progressive positions.

Those left to cherish her memory include her three children, George (Kathy) Peet of Boyne City, Barbara (Tom) Maier of Durham, North Carolina, and Cyndy (Mark) Hunt of Lake Worth, Florida; grandchildren, Nathan Peet Maier, Brittany Peet (Michael) Metivier, George Haller Peet, Harley Daniel Peet, Kate Sanders, Michele Brya, Brooke Snacker, Sarah Ries, and Fletcher Hunt; great-granddaughters, Sadie Peet Metivier and Willa Wren Metivier; and other loving family and friends. Those who have passed before her include her parents; her beloved husband, Millis; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Hobohm Peet; and a grandson, Spencer Hunt.
